Global-minded alumna makes US forests a priority

When Tchelet Segev ’18, MEng ’18, graduated from MIT with degrees in civil and environmental engineering, she had her sights set on becoming the first female UN secretary-general. She has since added other dream jobs to her wish list. “I applied to be an astronaut with NASA—I would drop everything to be an astronaut,” she says, laughing.  That Segev’s interests span the globe (and beyond) is unsurprising given her international upbringing in Taiwan, South Korea, Israel, and the US. The summer after graduation she completed three projects through the MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI) and MIT D-Lab, addressing environmental and health issues in Italy, South Africa, and Puerto Rico. But in her current job, as a project engineer for the United States Forest Service, she has also gained new appreciation for domestic challenges. For her first Forest Service assignment, Segev managed restoration efforts after the 30,000-acre Powerhouse Fire in California. In a...

Francesco ’70, SM ’72, and Marybeth Pompei

Frank Pompei  is founder and CEO of Exergen, a maker of scanners, thermometers, and sensors. He credits his MIT education with equipping him to build a successful company, mindful of the possibilities created by his financial aid package. “My parents could never have sent me to MIT on their wages as factory workers,” he says.  Thriving at MIT and beyond . “I remember the academics as challenging but always interesting and, in some ways, fun,” says Frank. “Inventing came easily for me, and MIT prepared me well.” Today, he holds more than 70 US patents, and Exergen’s signature temporal thermometer is powered by an infrared scanner he developed and patented after years of experimentation and study. “With 5,000 years of history touching the forehead as a rough gauge of body temperature,” he explains, “many attempted and failed to make a medically accurate device to measure body temperature there.” When the pandemic led to a surge in demand for accurate, noninvasive thermometers, ...

A legacy of landmark buildings in Malaysia and Singapore

Lim Chong Keat, MArch ’57, has created a towering legacy in Southeast Asia, in more ways than one. He’s responsible for modernist landmarks such as the Komtar Tower in Penang (once Malaysia’s tallest skyscraper) and the Singapore Conference Hall—which for half a century has hosted cultural and political events, serving as home to the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and later to the Singapore Chinese Orchestra. His design for Jurong Town Hall, which now houses Singapore’s Trade Association Hub, is angular and sleek, a fitting design for a key engine of the country’s modern economy. The Conference Hall and Town Hall, completed in 1965 and 1974, respectively, are among the first modern buildings to be designated by the Singapore Heritage Board as national monuments. For Lim, 91, this is particularly gratifying because “these projects were major civic buildings won by open architectural competition,” he notes. In fact, his firm won the Conference Hall contract through the first such competit...
